Don’t Recall Dobby

Posted by novometro on August 28, 2007

Come on now. It looked like L’Affair Dobbins was going to disappear into the annals of the Oakland Unified School District without Christopher Dobbins losing his seat on the governing board. That would have been the reasonable outcome for a series of moonlight encounters that would barely amount to a sexual scandal in modern day Tehran. But now, Chip Johnson at the San Francisco Chronicle suggests that Mr. Dobbins’ constituents launch a recall campaign against the hapless Mr. Dobbins as punishment for courting a 17-year-old freshman at Berkeley, who he met when she served as the school board’s student representative. A recall would be an absurd waste of money, time, and energy.

An investigation conducted by the school board found that Mr. Dobbins and the girl went on dates to places like Strawberry Canyon and the Berkeley Marina. At one point, the pair kissed. When the relationship became public, the Oakland Police Department found that no crime had been committed. The school board, only recently granted a small bit of power from its overlords in Sacramento, voted to censure Mr. Dobbins. For a 35 year-old man, who only months earlier had been sworn into his position surrounded by his family and Mayor Ron Dellums on a stage at the Paramount Theater, it was surely a low moment. We can let it rest there.

The email messages between Mr. Dobbins and the girl reveal that he behaved with much more restraint than she could expect from the goatish professors, lascivious TA’s, and lewd fraternity brothers that we all know populate every university in the world. Indeed, his anguished emails make him sound like the altar boy his lawyer claims him to be.

It’s true. The spectacle is embarrassing for the girl, and the troubled school board lost a little more dignity because of Mr. Dobbins’ immaturity. But unless a crime has been committed, a recall would be an inane distraction from the real crimes committed against Oakland’s young people.

I’m not a fan of recalls, but if Dobbins had any sense of decency whatsoever, he would resign immediately. He’s digusting.

When will Americans get over their fixation with sex? Grow up, travel, and you might realize that there are bigger problems in the world. This girl was 17, not 14. Also, remember all those songs about 17-year-old girls.. Why were they such huge hits, I wonder? Oh, all those disgusting men?!!! This guy did nothing. Girls that age are often hanging out with men who are really dangerous, and who actually have sex with them. This guy did not.

This is another example of an OUSD manufactured
(sponsored) witch hunt. Mr. Dobbins constituents are not in favor of actions undertaken by the school board acting as lackeys of the OUSD central administration. Nonetheless, this action was undertaken to discredit and remove Dobbins, so the District and its cronies on the Board could appoint a successor.

Don’t be bamboozled into thinking otherwise!!!

The Dobbins investigation by members of the school board was rife with conflicts of interest, a lack of due process, and possible legal ethics violations by the new school district counsel, Deborah Cooksey. Mr. Dobbins detractors on the school board sat in as the investigating subcommittee. Fair and impartial…NOT!

Why didn’t the school board take action against or investigate the actions of Director Alice Spearman (who is one of the ringleaders attempting to persecute Mr. Dobbins) when she all but assaulted a teacher during a recent televised meeting of parents, teachers, and school district officials?
(A clear example of hostile and embarrassing unprofessional conduct) Ms. Spearman had to be escorted out of the meeting by then District General Legal Counsel Roy Combs. What hypocrisy!

Can you spell disparate treatment? (of Dobbins)

Where’s the public outcry regarding OUSD Board Director Spearman?

Witch hunt? Dobbins could not have been discredited if he had not willfully engaged in a romantic relationship with a school district student. He continued to pursue the relationship with a teenager (in secret) after he was told to stop. What Dobbins did was exponentially worse than Ms. Spearman, who may be guilty of a short temper and poor judgement, but is not, to my knowledge, a sexual predator.

The best thing Dobbins can say for himself is that he didn’t cross the line into criminal behavior. Are we supposed to be impressed? Surely we should have higher standards for those we entrust with the care of our youth.

I don’t know, the only time I’ve seen Alice Spearman she was going ballistic over that joke of a school they eventually closed in East Oakland. If you asked me, the parents, teachers and students at that place had it coming. Someone should have done that to them long ago. As for the hapless Dobbins: Hey, he knew the job was dangerous when he took it. I’m as against witch hunts as the next witch, but really, he sent her an email! Just for stupidity’s sake the guy should be canned. Don’t dip your pen in the company ink, Dobbins.

People aren’t allowed to make mistakes here, are they? I’m sure none of you have ever been stupid or immature or reckless.

No one was harmed. Why make an issue bigger than it is?

What would a 17 year old want with this old man? Is it power?

Why would Mrs. Betty Jones the teacher’s union President want to keep him on the board? I think he needs some mental help.
